LEGO Engineering Challenges

Enrichment Matters Online -
Session 2 Online

A Sr. Structural Engineering Course

Beyond junior LEGO, get ready for the big LEGO challenges. Bring your hard-core creative juices and move beyond the square world of traditional LEGOs. This isn’t about structures, nor LEGO bricks, it’s about a way of thinking Each lesson teaches critical thinking, brainstorming, planning, testing, and refining – but then move beyond a square world as you tilt, turn, roll, and twist your creations.

You may use whatever LEGO bricks you have available to you. The base Lego Kits we traditionally use, and that the instructor uses, consist of 160 2X4 Bricks (one color), 350 2X4 Bricks (another color), and 1 16X32 baseplate. Depending on the lesson, we may add in a few more bricks. We do have these bricks for sale for $75, and use the same base kit in all of our Lego classes. So if you purchase the kit, you could use it in multiple classes and then eventually incorporate it into your Lego collection. However, the purchase of the kit is not mandatory. Learn how to purchase bricks here.

This class will take place on Zoom.

Starbright Enrichment/Ascendly

Ascendly classes teach the engineering skills and mindset needed for creative projects and problem-solving. Our core belief is that even the youngest students can learn many core concepts of advanced engineering topics. This belief is reinforced and drives the classroom experience throughout our Core Values:

Core Values

Everyone, rich and poor, young and old, girls and boys, when exposed to well well-designed experiences, can gain the enthusiasm and skills needed to become a young engineer.

We expect all members of the Ascendly community, employees, volunteers, and students to behave in the highest professional manner and we teach professionalism skills as part of the curriculum.

We know that not every kid will grow up to be engineer, but we believe that every kid deserves to be taught the skills and mindset needed to build things and to understand how things get built.

We disdain packaged kits and build-instructions. Whenever relevant, we provide students with open-ended challenges where there are multiple correct answers. When fabricating a creation, we’ll use real tools to develop real skills and thoughts habit that go beyond just following the next step in the instructions. Real engineers are characterized by a mastery of skills, a pattern of critical thinking, and super-charged curiosity. Our courses are designed to foster and reinforce those traits.

We start with advanced skills and concepts, and then re-package them into an enticing bundle perfectly suitable for grade-school children. You'll be amazed to learn what your students are able to do. We make concepts come alive in order to inspire your kids to become tomorrow’s engineers.

Expect a rich Parent-to-Program Relationship:

Parents will receive, prior to each session, an email covering that day's planned topic, along with optional parent-child discussion questions and activities.
